Kevin Johnson Becomes First Black Mayor of Sacramento

I'd been following the Kevin Johnson story since starting my blog, and in the euphoria of the moment forgot to confirm that he'd won the election to become the first black mayor of Sacramento, CA. Kevin Johnson, better known as "K.J." during his days as an NBA star is a native of Sacramento, and transformed his former high school into a charter school, raising academic requirements and expectations for the students.

The Sacramento Bee reports on Johnson's path to victory, and that his first item of business will be dealing with the city's budget crisis.

Sacramento Gang Tax Fails By One Vote

In an effort to increase police patrols and curb gang violence, the Sacramento City Council failed to pass a .25 percent tax increase by 1 vote yesterday. Opponents of the proposal stated that it didn't go far enough to address the shrinking police force and other areas of need for the city. If passed, voters would've had the opportunity to decide on the measure in November, and a $16 million cash infusion would've been used to increase the number of police and community service officers. Interestingly, Mayoral candidate, Kevin Johnson (pictured at left) opposed the measure.

Didn't the voters of Sacramento deserve a chance to vote on the proposal? This is a perfect example of why the trust of elected officials is so low. Thanks to the Sacramento Bee for supplying the link to the article.

Kevin Johnson Likely Headed for Run Off In Sacramento Mayoral Race

Former NBA star Kevin Johnson leads incumbent Heather Fargo 47 percent to 40 percent in the Sacramento, CA mayoral race as of Tuesday evening. There are still about 15,000 vote-by-mail ballots that have to be counted, but it appears unlikely that Johnson will have the required 50 percent mandate to avoid a run off. Johnson who supports presumed Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama seems poised to be the next mayor of Sacramento even with a likely November runoff.

Former NBA Great Running for Mayor of Sacramento, CA

Many may not be aware that former NBA Great Kevin Johnson is running for mayor of Sacramento, CA. K.J. was born and raised in Sacramento, and turned his former high school into a Charter School, and has also brought new businesses into the community. He has, however, been plagued by allegations of inappropriate relationships with young girls. This is a brief clip from a recent debate.
