America's First Black Female Rabbi: Alysa Stanton

Alysa Stanton was formally ordained yesterday as America's first female African-American rabbi. She will will be the first non-white rabbi of Congregation Bayt Shalom, a 60-family synagogue in Greenville, N.C. TIME Magazine profiles Rabbi Stanton.

This just goes to show how rich and varied African American culture is. We are represented in every and all facet of American life and culture. Way to go. I am going to have to keep tabs on this lady to see what follows.

Congratulations Rabbi Stanton and may only good things come to you and your new congregation. While your ordination certainly displays how rich and varied the African-American community is, it also demonstrates the same about the Jewish-American community. Two peoples with different histories, but a shared bond and much in common.
