I found this interesting article in the Chicago Tribune about racial tensions at Chicago area firestations. The persons interviewed for the article report that the racial atmosphere is more "covert" than in the past and that the "N Word" is still occasionally muttered in the workplace. The minority workers seemed to be more comfortable in segregated environments, which in 2010 shows that a lot of work still has to be done even when attempting to create a comfortable work environment for workers who have the common goal to protect and serve the residents of Chicago.
